Bedford Park has been described as the first garden suburb; an early arts and crafts community that included poets, writers, dramatists, painters and actors. The Tabard Inn, designed by Norman Shaw, was an important gathering place for the sharing of artistic and political ideas. The Tabard, with original decorative designs by William de Morgan and Walter Crane, was perhaps the first ‘improved’ pub, hosting concerts and forums. In 1985 a ‘new writing’ theatre was added which keeps alive the creative heritage of the area to this day.
